We started off in Munich. its a gorgeous airport. Very modern and clean. We rented an Opel. it was about the size of a Geo Metro, but mike insisted we refer to it as "the Panzer". Mike was excited about driving on German roads. He was anxious to see how fast he could get the car going. We weren't 20 feet out of the rental car parking lot before we were honked at for going too slow. Our first stop was Salsburg Austria. Home of Mozart. So what better place to stay in Salsburg then the Hotel Motzart! The city was a great first stop on our trip. It had great food, friendly people, classical music and castles, and Mike enjoyed the late night European TV shows.
We decided to take a tour of Hitlers vacation home in Birtchesgarten. Its at the top of mountain on the boarder of Germany and Austria. what we didn't know was that its been turned into a cafe. No original furniture, pictures, or artifacts were there too see. Just cafe tables, chairs, and patrons. Turns out that all of the Hitler-era stuff is at the bottom of the mountain in the visitors center. And it was cloudy, so we couldn't see the great views it has. We went all that way up just to end up seeing people eating. So we both agreed that even in death, Hitler is still screwing us allies.
The food in Bavaria was excellent. I wasn't just wieners and sauerkraut either. There was dishes from all over Europe. Waiters and other guest alike were helpful deciphering the menus too. Although, one time we decided to be adventurous and just pick something off the menu without translation. Mike could understand some of what the menu said but only about 50% worth. Amy ordered some tomatoy-cheesy thing. Mike knew that schwein=pork so he ordered the Schwein Sulze. It wasn't until the food showed up that we learned that sulze=gelatinous meat. Between both our meals we tried, then skipped, the sulze and ate the rest of the 'non-jiggly' foods then went back to our hotel for burgers.
The Swarovski crystal factory is in Austria so we decided to check it out. The factory has an exhibit of some art that includes crystals. They have a cool chunk of crystal that is in the shape of a diamond and as big as a head. Amy said it was "Really sparkly!"
The only problem is, to get to see that big crystal, you have to walk by the creepy babyheads.

Well, I typed a comment - then it apparently went "bye bye" when I had to sign on to Blogger. So, here goes again. Love all the info. Also love the food in Germany and Austria - was there in the early 80's. I ordered from the Kid's Menu without knowing it -gave my friend's a good laugh. Loved Salsburg too! Saw where they filmed "The Sound Of Music". My favorite ciy was Heidelberg. What's the story behind the creepy doll heads?
